Artist Statement

My early abstract paintings and drawings were created under the tutelage of Jay DeFeo and Jack Jefferson at the San Francisco Art Institute. I continued my studies in a more structured program at Parsons School of Design. However, as evident in the paintings from my series, My People, abstract expressionism remains a clear influence in my figurative work.

A figurative painting has the ability to not only convey physical features, but also to pull the essence of the subject's existence to the foreground. I look at a person through an expressionistic lens, seeing and exaggerating the asymmetry of their form to reveal their inherent beauty, which for me are one’s unique variances. My approach to the figure is to convey the unique weight of the subject's presence.
