Lorraine Bubar’s deep appreciation for traditional crafts and her extensive travels have exposed her to the diverse papercutting traditions found around the world, including her own Eastern European heritage. Her unique, painterly approach to papercutting not only honors these time-honored techniques but also reflects the diverse environments she has encountered. She uses handmade colored papers from the countries where she has traveled.

Her passion for hiking and the sublime beauty of natural landscapes has seamlessly intertwined with her artistic vision, leading to Artist-in-Residencies in various National Parks, including Denali, Zion, Petrified Forest, Lassen, Capitol Reef, and Acadia. With an x-acto knife, she creates intricate images that layer both paper and meaning. Her art delves into the ecological hierarchies of flora and fauna, illuminating the delicate balance between predator and prey, and the inherent fragility of each ecosystem. These works are not merely representations but rather commentaries on the uniqueness and vulnerability of natural habitats, striving to evoke awe and foster conservation.

In parallel, Bubar’s urban landscapes critique the social dynamics of city life, reflecting on the disparities between the housed and the unhoused, the relentless traffic, and the encroachment of overdevelopment.

Her distinctive approach to paper art has led to exhibitions at notable venues such as “Feasts on Paper” at the Shanghai International Paper Art Biennale, Paper Global: The International Triennial of Paper Art in Deggendorf, Germany, and The International Exhibition of Paper Cuttings at the National Museum in Vilnius, Lithuania. Each exhibit stands as a testament to her innovative fusion of traditional papercutting techniques with contemporary artistic discourse.

Los Angeles artist Lorraine Bubar creates lush imagery through the cutting and layering of fine Asian colored papers, reflecting the hierarchy and intricate patterns of nature. Exhibition open through January 26th.
